Romanian language lectorate

@Glendon College, York University Toronto

Romanian Language and Culture @Glendon College, York University Toronto

The course Romanian Culture in a Semiotic Perspective is cross-listed in the Linguistics Programme and in General Education; thereby it counts as both a linguistics course (like Romanian Language. A Linguistic Introduction) and as a course fulfilling in part the HUMA category of General Education requirements. Each class provides a semiotic theoretical framework illustrated by examples grounded in Romanian culture, i.e. by case studies to be discussed and analyzed. The theoretical sources includes classical texts by Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes along with texts by Thomas A. Sebeok and works in cultural semiotics (Yuri Lotman and the Turku school) as well as the work of scholars specialized in particular fields, such as Martin Esslin (theatre), Eero Tarasti (music), Boris A. Uspensky (history) and Dinda L. Gorlée (translation). Each topic/class investigates various languages, the interactions between language and political (especially totalitarian) systems, language and aesthetic revolts, sign systems (cf. Roland Barthes), and also, more or less implicitly, the relationship between language and speech (cf. Ferdinand de Saussure and the structuralists).

This course will offer an introduction to Romanian culture from a semiotic perspective. It will use various media to facilitate the exploration of how Romanians represent themselves to each other and to the world. Weekly lectures and discussions shall be accompanied by readings from Romanian literature (in English translation), as well as samples of Romanian music, film, painting, sculpture, and cuisine. A field trip to a Romanian cultural space in Toronto will be organized. Romanian-Canadian cultural personalities will be invited to speak about different aspects of the Romanian culture in Canada and in the world. In addition to class activities, you will have to work independently on your readings and assignments.

The course Romanian Language: A Linguistic Introduction proposes a historical, comparative and functional perspective of the Romanian language. The students will be initiated in the study of the formal and structural characteristics of Romanian.

Thorough analyses will be dedicated to aspects referring to the history, phonetics, vocabulary, morphology, syntax and semantics of the language.

The first part of the course will deal with linguistic aspects important in the study of the Romanian in a Romance and Balkanic context, with case studies, exemplifications and practical applications.

The second part of the course will be devoted to the acquisition of the Romanian language itself.

The evolution and elements specific to the Romanian language will be presented in comparative approaches and in the socio-cultural context of the Romance languages, but also that of the Balkanic languages.
